Unknown Dutch master from the 17th century
Drawing with ink/Tekening met inkt: Ruins of Huis ter Kleef castle near Haarlem (Ruine van Huis ter Kleef nabij Haarlem).
View on the ruins of the Huis ter Kleef, a castle near Haarlem.Shepherds with dogs in front of the ruins. Birds flying in the sky, above the ruins. Dated and signed below, 1649 Maas (or Maes). The date seems original, but the signature doesn't. In a sale catalog from 2010 (lot. 587) it is considered as a drawing by a young Nicholaes Maes (1634-1693), who in 1650s was beginning with his apprenticeship at Rembrandt's.On the bottom right corner, are traces of what seems to be a collector's mark, stamped in black ink, fashioned as a ramping animal (a lion?) in profile, turned towards the left. [not in Lugt].See R. van 't Zelfde, 'Josua Breckerveld (1644-1700)', Delineavit et Sculpsit 23 (juli 2001), p. 11-17, illustrated. Drawing on paper, in pen with brown ink, washed in grey with some highlights in white. Total: 270 x 404 mm. Pasted down on cardboard, an operation that is contributing to the spreading of foxing, especially on the top region. The drawing was probably divided into two pieces (from a notebook?) and recomposed by pasting it down on a wide cardboard. On the back another date was added in pen and brown ink 1885. and might refer to the pasting down (the kind of cardboard would be consistent with that period). Other more recent numbers on the backing in pencil. Possibly, the drawing was pasted down due to a minor defect of the paper, located on the shirt of the sitting shepherd. The hole has been repaired from the backing and the lacuna was filled in with pencil. This area extends for less than 5 mm.

Unknown master after Guercino ?
Death visiting the house of a poor family (de dood die een arme familie bezoekt).
In the interior of a very poor house, where a family is gathered. The mother is naked in bed, with three little toddlers on her side. On the side of the bed is standing a skeleton (skelet), personification of death. The father of the family is sitting on the bottom right of the picture, with his head resting between his hands. Other four children are probably begging him for food. On the right side is visible a portion of a fire place (open haard). The interior is extremely poor and apparently the mother is praying to God (represented by the sheet of paper hanging above her head, with the design of a cross), possibly to have her children spared by death. Etching on paper, trimmed within margins; total: 302 x 268 mm; see-through glue traces on the four corners, light smudges. In very good condition. Rare.

Antique print, etching and engraving | Solar Eclypse [allegory of Protestantism] / Verduistering, published ca. 1600, 1 p.
Page from a book with a peculiar illustration of a Solar Eclypse. The inscription below is the same that was included in Théodore de Bèze's 1580 edition of the Icones, a collection of portraits of the major European Protestant theologians and emblems that refer to the tyranny of the Roman Catholic Church. The inscription below reads: Luna velut fratri propius coniuncta, perisse / Stultis videtur funditus, / Quae tamen admoti spectat qua lumina Solis, / Longe refulget clarior. / Sic periisse pii vulgo qui morte videntur, / Absit perisse dixerim, / Ipso qui potius Christo propriore potiti, / Quod quaesierunt obtinent. which translates in When the moon gets closer to her brother (the Sun), seemes to disappear in the eyes of the foolish; yet the side facing the sun and thus closer to it gets actually brighter; in the same way the dead seem just dead to the common people. Yet these, now closer to Christ, have obtained what they wished for. Therefore the moon that stands closer to the sun represents the reformed man, who can stand up close to Christ, without the intercession of the Roman Church. From Hendrik Hondius's 'Icones virorum'. Etching and engraving on paper, on verso text in letterpress; plate mark: 173 x 122 mm, total: 217 x 170 mm; some damages along the external margins, not affecting the plate. Eigentliche Abbildung der Schantzen Caloo, Verbroek, und Feuerschen und wie solche von den Holländern befestigt und wie sie von den Spanischen wieder daraus geschlagen worden. Anno 1638.
The whole engraving consists of two superimposed separate views. On the top is a battle on the banks of the Scheldt, the right is a church; in the shallow water drift some sailing boats and many drowning soldiers. The bottom image is drawn in the form of a map with a view on the Scheldt; here are shown fortifications and many fighting soldiers. On the bottom of the pictures is the legend: 1-18. In 1638 Cardinal Infante Ferdinand, governor of the Spanish Netherlands, fought successfully against the Dutch and French armies. Finally, he was able to expel the invaders from the land. The Dutch built some hills around the Scheldt. In the battle which sparked by an attack of the Spaniards against these buildings, many soldiers were drowned, but the hills were finally able to be occupied by the Spaniards. This collision occurred in the 1638.l Etching on paper, lower border trimmed on platemark; total: 297 x 372 mm. PH4F

[Handcolored lithograph] S. PUBBLIO MART. PRIMO VESCOVO DI MALTA / patrono della parrocchia della floriana, ca. 1850-1860.
A picture of a statue of St. Publio, patron of the island of Malta. Publio was the first bishop in the island and according to the Scriptures, it was him to welcome St Paul on his journey to the center of Europe. The address on the bottom left suggests that this litho was produced by the Turgis publishers in Paris along with other prints with religious subjects: PARIS L. TURGIS & FILS, EDIT. IMP.R. DES ECOLES, 60 / ET A NEW YORK LEONARD St. 83. The publishing house was founded in 1828 and was very prolific throughout the century: it started out in Toulouse to move to Paris and from 1856 a branch was opened in New York. This latter was active until the very beginning of the twentieth century. This St. Publio belongs to the 400 series (479) and should be dated around 1860. Hand-colored lithography; total: 418 x 292 mm; despite some light smudges and small tears on the margins, in great condition.

In 1618 he was appointed as General Superintendent of the public Pawn Shop: he was in fact in charge of letting people in Flanders acquainted with the 'Monti di Pietá' system which was developed in Italy.
